How Often Should You Service Your Car? | All You Need to Know About Car Servicing

Yearly MOTs are a legal requirement to ensure that your vehicle is road safe. But what about car servicing? Many car manufacturers have guidelines that state how often a vehicle needs a service. If you don’t follow these guidelines, your warranty may be affected.

A service can help your car to run more smoothly and efficiently, and can prevent costly repairs later down the road. But how often should you really service your car?

Is A Car Service Essential?

From a legal standpoint, no. The government requires that all vehicles pass an MOT check yearly, but there is no law regarding servicing.

This isn’t to say that a service isn’t important, though. When buying a second hand car, the service history will be a major indicator of whether the vehicle has been looked after. Cars with a full service history will generally sell for more money and be more trusted by buyers.

How Often Should You Service A Car?

A car service should, at a minimum, happen every 12,000 miles or once per year. Think of a service like a health check-up. Any future problems can be easily spotted and remedied before they become more serious. Your car will run more efficiently and be safer to drive with proper care.

Do I Always Need A Full Service?

Not always, it depends on the age and mileage of your car. A very basic service could just be an oil and filter replacement. At the 6 month mark (or 6,000 miles) we can do an Interim Service, which is a bit more in-depth and includes a thorough visual inspection. A full service is what we recommend for 12,000 miles or yearly intervals. It’s important to get your vehicle serviced regularly, particularly if you’re doing a lot of miles or if you have any concerns about your car.

What’s Included In A Full Service?

A full service checks over the majority of the vehicles’ components. We will top up fluids and inspect the engine, brakes and steering. We’ll make sure that your lights and tyres are all performing well and make sure the battery is in tip top condition. We’ll replace any worn parts and let you know if there’s any potential issues to keep an eye on. This is just a glimpse of the many complex processes involved in a full car service.
