How Often Do Your Tyres Need To Be Replaced?

Do you know when you need to get new tyres? It can be difficult to recognise the signs that you need replacements. This can vary depending on the miles you cover and general wear and tear. It is a legal requirement to have your wheels in acceptable condition. Regular services can help raise any problems, but there are a few things to look out for in the meantime.

Signs That You Need Your Tyres Replaced

Old Age

There’s not an exact age when you should get your tyres replaced. Many manufacturers recommend that they shouldn’t be on a car for more than 10 years. The rubber on wheels is generally considered ‘new’ for around five years. If they have survived to this age, it’s important to keep an eye on them. Older material will be weak and inefficient.

Problems are easily raised with annual MOTs and services.  Commonly, front tyres will wear more than the rear in front-wheel-drives, so they’re expected to be replaced more frequently.

Old and worn tyres

The front two could go for at least 20,000 miles, with the rear being around 40,000 miles. However, this depends on the type of vehicle you own.

How long your tyres will last depends on a few variables:

Old Tyres

Worn Tread

Tread depth has a legal limit in the UK. It should not go below 1.6mm. Losing depth affects the grip to the road and braking speed. Longer braking times could result in an accident. Tyres will need to be replaced when they have shallow tread depths. Uneven wear is also a sign you need wheel alignment and replacements.

Flat Tyre

Air Pressure Inefficiency

Constantly putting air into your tyres could be a sign of a leak. Small punctures are easily repairable, however larger ones might result in a replacement. If you find yourself putting in air more than usual, then this indicates that something is wrong.

Cut tyre

Cuts Or Bulges

Any obvious signs of damage should indicate the need for a replacement. Serious lumps and tears are dangerous, so should be dealt with as soon as possible.
